The Mental Health Benefits of Surrounding Yourself With Floral Art

Have you ever walked into a room and felt your shoulders instantly drop?

Perhaps it's a relieving and long exhale after a long day?

Or, on the flip side, have you ever walked into a cluttered, dark space and felt your brain go into 'stress mode'?

We don’t talk about it enough, but our homes are essentially the starting place for the state of our mental health. Every day, we’re absorbing the energy of what’s around us. The light, the mess, and especially the colours on our walls.

If you’ve been feeling a bit flat lately, it might be time to look at what your eyes are landing on every single day.

The magic of 'biophilia' (the fancy word for nature-love)

There’s this beautiful concept called biophilia, which basically means humans have a need to connect with nature. When we can’t get outside for a hike or a garden stroll, our brains look for the next best thing: nature-inspired artwork.

Surrounding yourself with floral art isn't just about 'pretty flowers.' It’s a visual cue to your nervous system that says, "Hey, it’s okay. Growth is happening. Spring always comes back."

Why floral art feels like a hug for your brain

Floral art does something very specific that other styles don't:

  • Softness in a hard world: Most of our lives are full of 'hard' things. The coldness of flat screens, desks, concrete, and rigid schedules. The organic, flowing shapes of a petal or a leaf break up that hardness.

  • The energy of colour: I’m a big believer that certain hues can lower your heart rate, while a splash of brightness can be like a shot of espresso for your mood.

  • The power of symbolism: Flowers represent resilience. They push through the dirt to find the light. Having that reminder on your wall is a quiet influence that seeps into your subconscious.

Creating your own sanctuary

I started painting these abstracts because I needed to heal. I needed a way to process my own emotions and turn them into something vibrant. Now, when I see these pieces in your homes, I see them acting as little anchors of peace.

If you’re struggling with burnout or just feeling a bit 'meh', try bringing in one piece of art that makes you smile. It doesn’t have to match your cushions perfectly; it just has to match your soul.

Your home should be the place where you feel most yourself. And sometimes, all it takes to shift the energy of a room is one expressive brushstroke and a whole lot of pink.

Art tip of the week

Try placing a floral art print in the first spot you look at when you wake up, right behind your computer monitor. It gives your eyes a little break from the digital world!
