So you’ve found a piece of art you love, but there’s one more decision to make:

Should you buy it framed or unframed?

Framing can completely change the look and feel of an artwork. The right frame can make a piece feel more polished, help it blend into your home and turn it into a beautiful focal point.

But unframed art has its own advantages too. It gives you more flexibility, lets you choose a style that suits your home, and can be a more budget-friendly option.

At Carolyn Quan Art, different artwork types come with different framing options. Here’s what you need to know when choosing between framed and unframed art.

The Benefits of Buying Framed Art

One of the biggest advantages of framed art is convenience.

Your artwork arrives ready to hang, so there’s no need to search for a frame, compare colours or worry about finding the right size. It’s a simple, fuss-free option if you want to enjoy your new artwork straight away.

A frame can also give artwork a more finished and polished appearance. Depending on the style, it can make a piece feel modern, elegant, minimal or more traditional.

Framed art can be especially helpful when you’re:

  • Styling a new home

  • Creating a finished, designer look

  • Choosing a statement piece for your living room

  • Buying art as a gift

  • Looking for something ready to hang

The frame becomes part of the overall artwork, helping it make a stronger visual impact in your space.

The Benefits of Buying Unframed Art

Unframed art gives you more creative freedom.

Rather than being limited to one frame style, you can choose something that works beautifully with your existing furniture, colours and décor. You might prefer a light timber frame for a warm, natural look, a black frame for something modern and bold, or a soft white frame for a clean and minimal finish.

Choosing your own frame also makes it easier to create a cohesive look throughout your home... especially if you already have artwork displayed in matching or complementary frames.

Unframed artwork can also be a more accessible option because you can choose a framing solution that suits your budget. You may decide to frame the artwork immediately, or wait until you find the perfect frame.

Most importantly, you can make the artwork feel even more personal to your home.

Fine Art Paper Prints: Designed for Your Style

My fine art paper prints are currently sold unframed.

This is intentional. Every home is different, and framing is a very personal choice. By offering prints without a frame, you have the freedom to choose a frame that suits your taste, your décor and the feeling you want to create.

You may prefer a simple white frame, natural oak, warm timber, black or something more decorative. The choice is entirely yours.

Unframed prints also give you flexibility when styling your home. You can:

  • Choose a frame that complements your existing artwork

  • Create a gallery wall with matching frames

  • Add a mat or border for a more traditional look

  • Change the frame later if your style evolves

  • Select a framing option that works within your budget

The artwork stays the same, but the frame can help make it feel uniquely yours.

Canvas Prints: Framed to Feel Like Original Art

My canvas prints have framing options because they are designed to replicate the look and presence of original artwork.

A framed canvas print can create a more elevated, gallery-inspired finish while still offering the affordability and accessibility of a print.

The frame adds structure and visual impact, helping the artwork feel more substantial on the wall. It can also make a canvas print look more like a finished original painting.

Canvas prints are a beautiful option if you want:

  • A larger statement piece

  • Artwork with a painterly, textured appearance

  • A polished, ready-to-hang finish

  • The look and impact of an original painting at a more accessible price

If you love the expressive colour and movement of my paintings but are not ready to invest in an original, a framed canvas print can be a wonderful alternative.

Original Paintings: Framed or Unframed?

Some of my original paintings are available with framing, while others are offered as stretched, unframed canvases.

I’ve recently started offering more original paintings unframed to make original art more accessible and to give collectors greater flexibility when styling their homes.

A stretched canvas is still a complete, finished artwork. It can be displayed without a frame for a modern, relaxed and contemporary look - or you can choose a frame that suits your space.

Buying an original painting unframed also gives you the opportunity to select a frame that feels right for your home. You might choose a natural timber floating frame, a crisp white frame or a darker frame that creates contrast and makes the colours stand out.

And because framing preferences vary so much, this approach means you’re not paying for a frame you may not have chosen yourself.

If you would like your original painting framed, I’m happy to provide a separate framing quote. This allows you to choose the finish you love while keeping the artwork itself at a more accessible price.

Which Option Is Right for You?

There’s no right or wrong choice! It really depends on how you want to style your artwork.

Choose framed art if you:

  • Want a simple, ready-to-hang option

  • Prefer a polished and finished look

  • Don’t want to organise framing yourself

  • Are buying art as a gift

  • Want your canvas print to have the presence of an original artwork

Choose unframed art if you:

  • Want to select a frame that suits your home

  • Have existing frames you’d like to match

  • Enjoy personalising your décor

  • Want more flexibility with your budget

  • Prefer a modern, relaxed or minimalist look

Art Should Feel Personal

The artwork you choose is personal, and the way you display it can be personal too.

Whether you choose a framed canvas print, an unframed fine art paper print or an original painting, the most important thing is that the artwork feels at home in your space.

A frame can enhance an artwork, but it doesn’t define its value. The colour, movement, story and emotion are already there.

Choosing your own frame simply gives you another opportunity to make the artwork your own.
