So you have just purchased your first professional art print - congratulations!
Whether your masterpiece is on museum-grade canvas or fine art giclee paper, here are some tips to help ensure your prints remain vibrant and unblemished for years to come.
1. Handling with Care
Before discussing display and maintenance, it's crucial to highlight the importance of careful handling.
Wear gloves: Oils from your skin can transfer to the artwork, leading to smudges or stains. Use clean gloves when handling prints.
Hold edges only: Avoid touching the printed areas directly; always hold the edges to prevent damage.
Unroll with patience: If dealing with rolled prints, unroll them gently and allow them to flatten naturally instead of forcing them.
2. Choosing the Perfect Spot
The environment in which you place your art can significantly impact its longevity.
Avoid direct sunlight: UV rays can cause fading over time. Use UV-resistant glass or coatings for framed works or display areas with indirect lighting.
Control humidity: Excess moisture can lead to warping or mildew. Aim to maintain a relative humidity of 40-50% in your space.
Steady temperature: Avoid extreme temperatures or areas near heat sources like radiators, as they may damage the print or its framing.
3. Cleaning Techniques
Dusting and cleaning your prints periodically will keep them looking fresh.
Canvas prints: Gently wipe off dust with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid liquid cleaners unless they're specifically designed for canvas use.
Giclee prints: Take a soft, dry microfibre cloth or an artist's brush with natural bristles.. Gently brush the surface in one direction to remove dust or loose particles. Avoid excessive rubbing, which can damage the print.
Framed prints: Clean the glass or acrylic with a non-abrasive cleaner and a lint-free cloth for framed prints. Ensure no liquid seeps into the frame to avoid damaging the print itself.
4. Framing and Display
Proper framing and mounting techniques can protect your art prints from wear and tear.
Use archival materials: Acid-free mats and backing boards are ideal for preserving your giclee prints. Regular materials can cause discolouration or degradation over time.
Secure hardware: For canvas prints, ensure that hanging hardware is sturdy to prevent accidental falls.
5. Storage Tips
If you need to temporarily store your prints, ensure they’re placed in a safe environment.
Flat storage: To prevent creasing, store giclee prints flat in acid-free folders or archival sleeves. Canvas prints can be stored in a cardboard tube, rolled.
Temperature control: Keep stored prints in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Avoid stacking: If you must stack prints, layer them with protective sheets to prevent scratches or pressure damage.
